St. George’s, the picturesque, small capital with terraces of pale, colour-washed houses and cheerful red roofs, has long enjoyed the reputation of having the prettiest harbour in the Caribbean. Established in 1705 by French settlers, who called it Fort Royal, much of the town’s present-day charm results from the blend of two colonial cultures with a Caribbean atmosphere. The colonial heritage is reflected in remaining 18th-century French provincial houses and fine examples of English Georgian architecture. Around the island, the scenery is equally appealing: the mountainous interior rises from a generally rugged coast, which in part is blessed with dazzling white beaches. Due to its compact size, Grenada can be easily explored, even on just a one-day visit.

St. Maarten is an unusual island of dual personality – partitioned into French and Dutch sides. Discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second journey to the Americas in 1493. Tear into the fresh local produce and taste the island’s sensational seafood – from lobster to red snapper and conch cocktails. Don’t miss the opportunity to try out the island’s favourite tipple, either – guavaberry rum. Beautiful green peaks offer stunning hikes, amid the rich tangle of jungle scenery. Maho Beach may also be on the radar – the tranquillity of this small beach is regularly interrupted by the deafening roar of jet engines, as Princess Juliana International Airport’s runway comes perilously close to the sands. Huge planes skim just above the beach before touching down, and the blasts of departing jet engines blow violent gales out towards the waters.

Het UNESCO-werelderfgoed is sinds 1745 onafgebroken in gebruik en toont een telescoop die ooit door Nelson zelf werd gebruikt. Andere bezoekers kunnen ervoor kiezen om te loungen op een van de witte zandstranden, watersporten te beoefenen of een ritje te paard langs de kust te maken. The landscapes here are beautiful, and things are no less spectacular offshore, where glorious crystalline waters invite you to dive with turtles, and explore doomed wrecks like the River Taw ship – which has now exploded with marine life. In Basseterre itself, stop off to see the pea-green Berkeley Memorial clock, which stands in the Circus, surrounded by busy St. Kitts life. Independence Square is also waiting among the city’s charming Georgian buildings. Renamed from Pall Mall on the 19th of September 1983 – to celebrate the island’s independence – the pretty square gravitates around a colourful burbling fountain, and has a dark history, as a former slave market. Wary canons watch out over the waves far below at Brimstone Hill Fortress, a site of significant history, which dates back to 1690. Known as the ‘Gibraltar of the West Indies’ due to its importance at the heart of the British empire, St. Kitts was one of the first island in the West Indies to be colonised. Nowadays, its World Heritage Site fortress offers panoramic views along the coastline it was built to defend.

Haast zodra u de haven van Kralendijk in gaat, realiseert u zich dat dit een van de meest gemoedelijke aanlegplaatsen is. Hoewel er een aantal kleurrijke straten is om door te wandelen naar de nabijgelegen resten van (meestal) Bonaire‘s Nederlandse koloniale tijdperk, missen zelfs de drukste straten de drukte van andere Caraïbische hoofdsteden. Wat prima is. De betrekkelijke rust komt de grootste bezienswaardigheden van het eiland ten goede: legendarisch ongerepte wildernis, zowel boven als onder de oppervlakte; mangroven vol jonge vissen; en zoutvlakten vol flamingo‘s. En riffen vol met… van alles. Hier stroomt de beker van de natuur over. En ook de uwe overigens (probeer zeker de cactuslikeur, ook als u geen van de andere lokale drankjes neemt). Er is ook een schandalig grote culturele rijkdom dankzij de verschillende indiaanse, Spaanse, Afrikaanse, Nederlandse en Britse invloeden op het eiland. U zult sporen van de talen horen van alle genoemde naties (plus een beetje Frans en Portugees) tijdens gesprekken in het Papiamento, de creoolse taal gesproken in de Nederlandse Antillen. U zult ontdekken dat u met zinnen als por fabor, danki en bon dia ver komt, omdat ze allemaal betekenen wat u denkt dat ze betekenen.

Terwijl de legendarische dagen van weleer van Willemstad verkend kunnen worden in instellingen zoals het Kura Hulanda en Curaçao Maritime Museum, is dit ook een bruisende levendige stad. Onder de hoogtepunten van deze multiculturele smeltkroes kan een stop vallen bij de drijvende markt en een bezoek aan een curaçaodistilleerderij om de beroemde lokale likeur te proeven. Natuurlijke wonderen wachten ook: enkele van de mooiste duik- en snorkellocaties van de Caribbean zijn hier te vinden. Tot slot kunt u met een maaltijd in Willemstad de diversiteit van het eiland ervaren door middel van de verrassende smaken van de keuken, die de Europese, Caribbean- en Zuid-Amerikaanse invloeden weerspiegelt.”
